Democrat Roy Cooper has won the United States Senate race in North Carolina, marking a vital breakthrough for his party as they work to challenge the Republican majority in the 100-seat chamber. According to media projections, Cooper defeated Republican candidate Michael Whatley, an ally hand-picked by President Donald Trump. This victory provides Democrats with a necessary gain in their effort to overcome the 53–47 edge held by Republicans entering Tuesday's elections, where a net gain of four seats is required to take control.

Cooper, 69, is a former two-term governor who leveraged his significant statewide recognition to build a lead in the polls, ultimately securing strong support from independent voters. His campaign focused heavily on the rising costs of energy and food. He is set to replace retiring Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who chose not to seek re-election following a public disagreement with President Trump regarding Medicaid cuts included in the president's major tax and spending legislation.

His opponent, Michael Whatley, is a former chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) and has never held elected public office. Throughout the campaign, Whatley worked closely with President Trump and the president's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, who served as co-chair. Together, they directed an RNC election integrity operation aimed at mobilizing 100,000 lawyers and volunteers across key battleground states to monitor polling procedures for the 2024 presidential election. Trump had previously endorsed Whatley in 2024 to succeed Ronna McDaniel as leader of the party.
