A tragic event unfolded at a youth soccer match in Kansas on Saturday afternoon when a pickup truck drove through the fields, leaving two people dead and 11 others hospitalized. The incident occurred on Oct. 17 at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, a sports facility featuring several indoor and outdoor fields.
Emergency services responded rapidly after Sedgwick County 911 received multiple urgent calls at approximately 3:25 p.m. local time. According to eyewitness accounts, a black pickup truck plowed through the youth soccer fields, hitting multiple people before coming to a stop about 100 to 200 yards farther down the grounds. First responders from the Wichita Police Department, neighboring law enforcement agencies, the Wichita Fire Department, and Sedgwick County EMS arrived at the scene, where dozens of medical personnel provided assistance to victims and performed CPR.
Authorities confirmed that two fatalities occurred in the incident, with police identifying one of the deceased victims as a child. An additional 11 individuals—comprising five children and six adults ranging in age from 5 to 68 years old—were transported to area hospitals. Ten of those patients suffered traumatic injuries that varied from minor bruises to extremely severe trauma. A 61-year-old woman was also hospitalized for an unknown medical condition. Although the exact medical statuses of the injured were not immediately available, Wichita police stated that all injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, was taken into custody on site and is actively cooperating with law enforcement. Officers located the pickup truck on the field, where the woman remained alongside two juveniles who were passengers inside the vehicle. Wichita police Capt. Aaron Moses addressed the media during a news conference, describing the event as a "tragedy" and assuring the public that the driver no longer presented any ongoing threat.
The Wichita Police Department publicly stated on X that it was conducting an investigation into a mass casualty incident involving a motor vehicle. At present, investigators have not established how fast the truck was traveling or how it managed to enter the playing field. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage provided by the Stryker Sports Complex, whose owners are cooperating fully with authorities. Police noted that further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
