A tragic aviation incident occurred on November 1 when a Learjet 60 crashed into a mobile home neighborhood in South Florida, claiming the lives of all nine people on board. Federal officials confirmed the fatalities following the accident, which took place at approximately 12:50 p.m. ET near the intersection of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, close to the communities of Greenacres and Palm Springs in Palm Beach County.
The aircraft, which had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas, was en route to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it went down. Upon impact, the jet erupted in flames, causing extensive damage to the area and scattering debris across a significant distance. While the immediate aftermath involved several fires and an apparent impact crater, it remains unclear if there were any injuries or fatalities among residents on the ground.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the event as a "horrific tragedy" in a public statement. Local authorities, including the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, moved quickly to secure the site, closing all lanes of Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North and advising motorists to seek alternative routes.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with the NTSB taking the lead on the inquiry. Weather reports from the West Palm Beach area at the time of the incident indicated overcast skies, rain, and lightning, with winds blowing from the east at 15 mph, gusting up to 25 mph. Visibility was recorded at seven miles by the National Weather Service in Miami.
