The U.S. military initiated limited, defensive strikes against Iranian targets located in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. The operation specifically targeted Qeshm Island, a strategic location in the northern part of the waterway used by the Iranian regime to monitor and exert control over commercial shipping traffic.
The military action followed two separate confrontations on Monday. The initial incident involved Iran's Revolutionary Guards firing at an American fighter jet, which prompted the aircraft to return fire. Later that day, Iran launched a missile from Qeshm Island that posed a threat to commercial shipping in the area.
In response to the strikes, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated on Tuesday that Tehran maintains the right to legitimate self-defense. He asserted that Iran would continue to exercise this right until the military aggression against the country is brought to a complete and permanent end. Iran has previously retaliated against perceived attacks on its territory throughout the ongoing war, which was sparked by joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on February 28. These retaliatory measures have frequently involved targeting commercial shipping and U.S. interests across the Persian Gulf.
The broader conflict continues to influence political landscapes in both the United States and Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly urged for further sustained military strikes against Iran during a phone call with Mr. Trump over the weekend. The ongoing war has also impacted domestic politics, with rising costs linked to shipping threats in the Strait of Hormuz contributing to declining support for Mr. Trump and the Republican Party. Similarly, in Israel, the right-wing bloc led by Mr. Netanyahu lost its majority in the first parliamentary elections held since October 7, 2023.
Financial reports indicate that the war has cost U.S. taxpayers at least $47.1 billion in military expenditures as of mid-October. This figure covers military spending but does not account for the costs associated with damage to U.S. bases in the Middle East, which have frequently been targeted by Iranian missiles and drones.
