Democrat Amy Acton has won the election for governor of Ohio, defeating Republican contender Vivek Ramaswamy and securing the party's first victory in the state's gubernatorial contest since 2006.
The Associated Press officially declared Acton the winner of the race at 10:49 p.m. EST. Acton, a physician who served as Ohio's health director during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, rose to prominence in 2020 as the state managed severe social disruption, heightened anxiety, and a wave of deaths. Despite her Democratic party affiliation, she worked closely alongside Republican Governor Mike DeWine throughout that crisis.
In a statement released following her election victory, Acton said Ohio voters chose "unity over hate." She laid out the central focus of her incoming administration, stating, "Ohio is ready for a governor who will fight to lower costs, take on corruption, and build a state where everyone gets a fair shot."
Her opponent, Ramaswamy, a biotech billionaire who previously sought the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, campaigned with the official endorsement of President Donald Trump. Acton's victory breaks a 20-year Republican stronghold on the governorship.
