United States House Speaker Mike Johnson has confirmed he will step down as the Republican leader following his party's heavy defeat in the midterm elections. A spokesperson for the Louisiana Republican confirmed the news in a one-word email response to an inquiry regarding the accuracy of reports about his departure. Johnson, 54, currently serves as the highest-ranking Republican in the nation after President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, placing him second in the line of presidential succession.
The decision was shared with his staff on Wednesday morning, just one day after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress in a result that marked a sweeping rejection of President Trump’s administration and legislative agenda. Johnson has held the position of speaker since October 2023, when he was selected as a compromise candidate to end weeks of internal party turmoil that followed the removal of Kevin McCarthy. Although he campaigned extensively to protect the party's narrow majority, his choice to not seek the minority leadership role effectively avoids a contested internal fight following the election.
Despite his decision to step down as leader, Johnson won re-election to his Louisiana seat and does not intend to resign from the speakership or Congress immediately. His withdrawal has triggered a leadership race between House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan. Both men are prominent conservatives and allies of President Trump, and a party vote is scheduled for next Tuesday. President Trump expressed support for Johnson’s tenure, stating, "The speaker was fantastic. The people under him were fantastic. All good people," while confirming he would remain out of the succession contest.
Meanwhile, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries formally launched his campaign on Wednesday to become the next speaker. Jeffries is widely expected to secure the role when the new Congress convenes in January. If he succeeds, Jeffries would become the first Black speaker of the House. He has pledged to focus his leadership on economic affordability and congressional oversight.
