A group of students who were kidnapped in May by Muslim militants in Nigeria’s southwestern Oyo state have been successfully rescued, the government confirmed on Friday. While government spokesman Bayo Onanuga did not disclose the precise number of students recovered during the operation, authorities previously reported that more than 40 individuals had been abducted from two secondary schools on May 15.

Alongside the rescue of the students, Onanuga stated that eight militants were taken into custody as part of the security operation. These kidnappings in the southern Oyo state were viewed as a notable escalation of the country’s ongoing security crisis, as such incidents have historically been concentrated in the northern regions of Nigeria.
