Police have stated that there is currently nothing to suggest that the murder of 78-year-old Ann Widdecombe was politically motivated. The former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokesperson was discovered dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday, with police believing she had been attacked approximately 24 hours prior to the discovery.
Following the arrest of a 28-year-old man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Saturday, authorities confirmed they are not searching for any other individuals in connection with the incident. The arrest was executed shortly after 21:00 BST. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman noted that while officers remain open-minded regarding a potential motive, there is no perceived threat to the wider public.
The family of the deceased has been informed of the latest developments and is receiving support from specialist officers. Chief Constable James Vaughan described the police response to the killing of the prominent public figure as extraordinary and stated that the investigation has been moving at a lightning pace over the last 48 hours. He expressed satisfaction that a suspect is now firmly in custody.
Authorities have received more than 120 reports of information following a public appeal. Assistant Chief Constable Longman has urged anyone with information who has not yet come forward to do so as a priority. He also reiterated a call for the public to avoid speculation, particularly regarding motives, stating that such talk is unhelpful to the investigation and distressing to the family.
Ann Widdecombe served as the Conservative MP for Maidstone for 23 years and held ministerial positions in John Major’s government between 1994 and 1997. After leaving the Commons in 2010, she appeared on television programs. She later joined the Brexit Party, representing South West England as an MEP from 2019 to 2020.
