The United States government has formally announced its intention to collaborate with Congress to approve a $1 billion assistance package for Colombia. This funding is designed to support the administration of the country's new right-wing president, Abdelardo de la Espriella, as part of a renewed security partnership between the two nations.
In a statement released late on Friday, the US State Department noted that the assistance is a cornerstone of a renewed partnership aimed at achieving shared goals. The agency plans to work closely with Colombia to strengthen its security forces through the use of US technology, improved defense-spending efficiency, greater military interoperability, and coordinated operations with US forces. The Trump Administration expressed its commitment to working with the new Colombian leadership to ensure security and prosperity for both nations and the broader hemisphere, building on more than 200 years of friendship.
President de la Espriella, 48, was sworn in on Friday in the city of Cali. By choosing to hold the ceremony in Cali rather than the capital, Bogota, he broke with tradition to underscore his firm stance against armed groups in the region. A US presidential delegation, led by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, represented Washington at the inauguration, signaling a commitment to reinvigorating relations and deepening the security and economic partnership between the two countries.
Known as "The Tiger," the new president holds dual US and Colombian citizenship. During his inaugural address, he vowed to restore order and eradicate what he termed "narco-terrorists." He declared that the option of dialogue with guerrillas is "completely exhausted," marking a sharp departure from the peace talks pursued by his predecessor, Gustavo Petro, who did not attend the ceremony and left the presidential residence earlier that day. De la Espriella has pledged to take a tougher approach to drug trafficking, implement austerity measures to strengthen the economy, and join President Donald Trump’s regional anti-cartel alliance, known as Shield of the Americas.
In his first speech as leader, delivered to soldiers at a military garrison, the president stated that there would be "no room for maneuvers that undermine the stability of the nation." His proposed agenda includes bombing jungle cocaine labs, constructing "mega-prisons," slashing the size of the state, and potentially hosting US troops on Colombian soil.
