A 30-year-old American tourist died on Sunday after being struck by lightning while hiking on Italy's Mount Etna. The man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed by authorities, was caught in a powerful thunderstorm that moved across the region. According to reports from the national news agency ANSA and other outlets, the hiker had entered an area designated as off-limits, apparently in an attempt to get closer to the summit of the active volcano.

Emergency services and firefighters reached the man by helicopter at approximately 8 p.m. local time on Sunday. Upon arrival, they found him in a state of cardiac arrest. He was transported to Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania, but medical personnel were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m., as reported by the local newspaper Catania Today.

The incident occurred during a period of heightened activity for Mount Etna, which is recognized as Europe's tallest and one of the world's most active volcanoes. Recent weeks have seen frequent ash eruptions and lava flows, which have clouded the skies over eastern Sicily and caused disruptions at the nearby Catania International Airport. With roughly 1.5 million annual visitors, the mountain presents unique hazards due to the combination of volcanic activity and rapidly changing weather conditions.

Italy's Civil Protection agency has issued warnings regarding the mountain's topography, noting that the rapid transition from sea level to high-altitude conditions often leads to sudden weather shifts as humid sea air meets colder air masses. Due to increased volcanic activity, authorities have recently restricted access to upper slopes where there is minimal shelter above the tree line. This tragedy was one of two fatal lightning strikes in Italy on Sunday; authorities also reported the death of an Italian man who was struck while hiking in the Alps in the South Tyrol province.
