At least 23 people were killed and five others sustained injuries following a head-on collision between a minibus and a truck in the southern Brazilian state of Parana early Wednesday. Authorities reported that the crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. on a highway near Ipiranga, a city of 14,000 residents located 560 kilometers (350 miles) south of Sao Paulo.

According to Brazil’s traffic police, preliminary evidence suggests that the truck, which was not carrying any cargo at the time, crossed into the lane of oncoming traffic and struck the minibus. The passengers aboard the minibus included healthcare workers, patients, and several of their family members.

The confirmed death toll from the incident includes 21 adults and two children. Emergency response teams and local police remained at the scene for several hours to conduct operations. Footage captured by TV Globo showed the truck parked on the grass alongside the road, while the minibus appeared severely crushed. The site was littered with shattered glass and the personal belongings of the passengers.
