Newly installed General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman presided over the opening, issuing a call for strengthened international cooperation. Guterres pledged his full support to Rahman, emphasizing that bolstering the multilateral architecture remains the primary objective for member states. According to the Secretary-General, international bodies such as the Security Council and global financial institutions are currently under significant strain due to a variety of factors, including persistent armed conflicts, the risks of nuclear escalation, extreme poverty, climate disruption, and the growth of unregulated artificial intelligence.
Addressing the assembly, Rahman noted that the organization’s survival over eight decades has been instrumental in preventing a third world war, which he identified as a core reason for its existence. He acknowledged a growing trust deficit that currently challenges the effectiveness of international institutions and collective action. Rahman committed to working throughout the session to address this shortfall through dialogue, enhanced cooperation, and tangible results.
Guterres concluded the opening remarks with a plea for renewed diplomatic engagement, stating that through collaboration and dialogue, the Assembly has the opportunity to repair the trust and good faith currently missing from global geopolitics. He expressed his hope that this effort would ensure a healthier, more peaceful future for people worldwide.
