The Trump administration has initiated a comprehensive federal investigation into Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, seeking to build a legal case that could strip her of U.S. citizenship and result in her deportation. According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, which cited U.S. officials and sources familiar with the matter, the multipronged inquiry is scrutinizing the process by which Omar obtained citizenship after arriving in the United States as a child refugee from Somalia.
The investigation specifically examines the paperwork filed during her family's arrival from a Kenyan refugee camp in 1995. A central focus of the probe is whether Omar’s age was altered on citizenship documentation to reflect 17 instead of 18, a change that would have allowed her to derive citizenship automatically through her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, in 2000. While the Biden administration had previously reviewed similar allegations, it ultimately dropped the matter due to a lack of evidence of fraud.
The investigation intensified on Monday when federal agents conducted a court-authorized search of Omar's home in Washington, D.C., just three weeks before the midterm elections. During the search, investigators seized her personal computers, notebooks, passport, and mobile phone. Authorities have also issued over a dozen subpoenas, including to members of the congresswoman's family, requiring them to provide testimony before a federal grand jury in Minnesota.
Representative Omar has strongly condemned the search and the broader investigation, characterizing the actions as an “authoritarian attempt” to intimidate her. In a statement posted to the X platform, Omar asserted that the administration is attempting to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement, adding that she will not be silenced. The case aligns with the administration's broader scrutiny of naturalized citizens' status, which has already resulted in more than 200 civil lawsuits. To successfully strip an individual of citizenship, the Justice Department must file a federal lawsuit to prove that material fraud was committed. Separately, U.S. Attorney for Washington Jeanine Pirro confirmed that her office is also conducting an investigation into Omar's financial disclosures.
