US Conservative Outlets Use European Unrest to Warn Midterm Voters

As Republicans seek to rally voters ahead of November's midterm elections, conservative media networks across the United States have aligned with Donald Trump's framing of foreign political unrest, broadcasting scenes of protests in Europe as a dire warning of what could happen in America under Democratic leadership.

Donald Trump initiated the rhetoric during a rally in Kansas on Monday, telling attendees that "migrants" and "communists" caused recent unrest in France and declaring that those scenes reflect "what the radical 'Dumocrats' want to do to America." Following his comments, conservative cable channels including Fox News, Newsmax, and One America News (OAN) adopted similar messaging aimed at encouraging Republican turnout at the polls.

On Fox News, host Sean Hannity showcased footage of fires in France on Tuesday beneath a chyron reading "A warning from Europe." Hannity argued that the situation abroad was intentionally orchestrated, telling viewers: "This is, sadly I argue, by design – an attempt by the left to destroy the free world, western civilisation, if you will." He added that the demonstrations served as "a preview of coming attractions here in America."

Fellow Fox News presenter Laura Ingraham featured Jamie Metzl, a healthcare futurist and geopolitical expert, on Monday to draw similar parallels. Metzl told viewers, "If you like what you’re seeing in France then you should support these DSA candidates who are essentially calling for the same thing here." Days earlier, Ingraham had broadcasted in front of a graphic of a cartoon flashing police light labeled "A warning to America," alongside an all-caps chyron reading "DON'T LET AMERICA BECOME FRANCE." Ingraham warned: "America, this is a warning. From the immigration disaster there, to the fiscal mismanagement, the same promises: free college, government-funded healthcare, tax the rich, climate change, open borders – they’re all being sold here, and they were implemented, some of them, here by AOC, Bernie, El-Sayed."

Other Fox News anchors echoed the sentiment. Jesse Watters played footage of violent demonstrations in France on Monday, asserting that the underlying goal was "to replace communism with capitalism," before claiming, "It's already started to happen here." On Tuesday, Lawrence Jones read a social media post from Vice-President JD Vance regarding France, in which Vance wrote: "I hope Americans are paying attention. This is the future congressional Democrats seek for your country." Jones stated that Vance was "exactly right" and interviewed Daily Wire editor Ben Domenech, who asserted that the scenes in France are "the consequences of becoming apologetic about their values, viewing nationalism as something which is a dirty word."

The narrative also featured prominently on Newsmax. Host Bianca de la Garza asked former Republican senator Rick Santorum on Monday if the unrest in France was a "wake-up call for America." Santorum agreed, arguing that democratic socialists and mainstream leftist Democrats want to import Europe's economy and style of government to the U.S., which he claimed would lead to violent protests. Santorum further claimed that "the standard of living of the average European is far below the standard of living of Americans." On the same day, Newsmax host Greta Van Susteren interviewed Minnesota Republican Congressman Tom Emmer, who urged Americans to pay close attention to events in France. Emmer stated: "We want everyone to come to this country and chase their American dream. We want them to come here legally. And we also, Greta, want them to come to be Americans. We celebrate culture in this country like no one else." He warned that failing to integrate immigrants would lead to unrest, adding, "If you don’t come to this country to be an American, what you’re seeing in Paris is what is going to happen. You cannot have a different country within your country."

One America News (OAN) similarly amplified the warning. On Monday, OAN interviewed Andrew Fox, introduced as a "cultural expert" with 433 followers on X, who remarked: "If we pay attention to what’s happening in Paris we can see our near future, if we don’t really toughen up immigration policy and the integration of how those immigrants become one with the nation they’re joining." Additionally, OAN host David Pollack expanded the comparison to include Italy, posting a video of Italian demonstrators online with the message: "Now it’s happening in Italy: import the third world, and this is what you get. The sad thing was, this was all by design. And the Marxists are coming for the United States next."
