The National Football League has officially announced that rapper Jay-Z will perform at the Super Bowl LXI halftime show. The championship game is scheduled to take place on February 14 near Los Angeles.

While Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, has been responsible for producing the halftime show since 2019, and the artist has played a central role in selecting performers for previous years, this marks his first time appearing as a performer during the NFL championship game. The league's announcement did not confirm whether the hip-hop mogul will be the sole headliner for the event.

In a statement regarding the upcoming performance, the NFL noted that discussions about potential guest stars will now begin, explicitly mentioning that his wife, Beyoncé, would be at the top of any such list. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating he has long awaited this moment. Goodell recalled that when the league first entered an agreement with Roc Nation, his only request was that Jay-Z take the stage himself whenever the timing felt right.

The announcement followed two concerts performed by Jay-Z last weekend at the same Los Angeles stadium where the Super Bowl will be hosted. Those shows were part of a tour marking the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt. Reflecting on his career, the rapper, whose birth name is Shawn Carter, described the progression from his early work to the Super Bowl stage as a significant journey, calling the opportunity a dream come true after three decades of music and culture.
