Aston Villa have completed the signing of midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves, launching a move for the Brazilian after Chelsea agreed to acquire England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Unai Emery's side.
The 25-year-old Gomes, who has earned 10 international caps for Brazil, chose a move to Villa Park despite also being a transfer target for Spanish club Atletico Madrid. Villa successfully convinced him to make the transition from Wolves, who are currently playing in the Championship.
Gomes originally joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and went on to make 130 appearances for the club. However, he was unable to prevent them from suffering relegation from the Premier League last season.
His arrival at Villa Park represents a key part of a major squad overhaul for the Europa League winners. Earlier in July, Villa sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, while Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana has been ruled out until next year after sustaining a serious knee injury during the World Cup.
To further strengthen the squad, Emery also completed a deal on Friday for Freiburg's Swiss winger Johan Manzambi. That transfer was completed for a £50 million fee, setting a new record signing for Villa.
