Bulgaria has bolstered security protocols at its Bezmer Air Base following intelligence reports that Iranian forces have evaluated prospective military targets across southeastern Europe. The heightened protective measures were implemented in close coordination with the country's defense ministry, according to Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev.

Demerdzhiev confirmed that the defensive steps taken are highly proactive, designed to exceed the threat level currently projected by national security services. "We are constantly monitoring the situation and developments and will continue to take precautionary measures that are far more extensive and intensive than the level of threat indicated by the information available at the moment," the Interior Minister stated, as reported by the Bulgarian news agency BTA on Wednesday.

The security upgrade follows reports indicating that Iranian forces have been assessing potential strikes against United States military assets located in southeastern European nations. Bulgaria is directly affected by these developments, having recently authorized the stationing of U.S. refueling aircraft at the Bezmer facility.

On July 22, the Bulgarian parliament approved a deployment allowing up to eight U.S. Air Force KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft and up to 250 American military personnel to operate from Bezmer. This deployment, scheduled from July 24 to October 1, is designed to assist U.S. military operations in the Middle East.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high despite diplomatic efforts. Although Iran and the U.S. signed a memorandum of understanding in June to halt the conflict that erupted in late February and establish a framework for a wider treaty, subsequent negotiations have hit a standstill. The impasse centers on disagreements over the agreement's implementation and maritime navigation through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Concurrently, separate talks between Iran and Oman regarding navigation arrangements in the waterway have continued but have yet to yield a breakthrough.
