A newly released political platform from the Democratic Socialists of America has outlined an ambitious vision for restructuring the United States government, triggering swift and intense pushback from conservative leaders. The policy roadmap, published on July 14 under the title "Workers Deserve More," presents a sweeping plan for American social democracy. Prominently featured on the platform's website is the vision: "You have no debt. You don’t need health insurance. You don’t pay a mortgage or have a landlord, because comfortable housing is a human right."
The proposals quickly drew sharp criticism from Republicans, including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. He denounced the platform on social media, describing it as "communism" promoted by "barbarians." Johnson specifically targeted the platform's more radical constitutional proposals, such as dismantling the U.S. Senate and having Congress select the president. Writing on X, Johnson stated, "This isn’t just Common Sense vs. Crazy anymore. It’s Common Sense vs. COMMUNISM."
While not all self-described democratic socialists belong to the Democratic Socialists of America, the 120,000-member organization has become an increasingly prominent voice on the American left. A CNN poll conducted on July 30 indicated that one-third of Democrats identify as democratic socialists, though many may not be fully aware of the organization's specific proposals for institutional change. Additionally, a Reuters/Ipsos poll from July 28 showed that 47% of Americans do not understand democratic socialist policies.
The DSA's platform is organized into three distinct sections. The first, "Working-Class Democracy," focuses on expanding electoral access. It calls for extending voting rights to all permanent residents regardless of citizenship status and restoring voting rights to individuals who lost them due to criminal convictions. It also advocates for Washington, D.C. statehood and self-determination for U.S. territories, including Puerto Rico and Guam. Structurally, this section proposes fundamental alterations to the U.S. Constitution, including abolishing the U.S. Senate and the Electoral College, replacing the presidency with a prime minister chosen by Congress, and replacing the Supreme Court with an elected council. Economically, it demands the public ownership of large corporations, the implementation of aggressive wealth taxes, and stronger protections for worker unionization.
The second major section, "Working Class Foreign Policy," addresses global relations and immigration. The DSA proposes a path to citizenship for all immigrants, regardless of status, alongside easing entry requirements. This plan includes abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and ending all ICE-led detentions and deportations. Under the banner of "Free Palestine," the platform demands an immediate end to all U.S. military assistance to Israel and calls for the prosecution of U.S. and Israeli leaders over the conflict in Gaza.
The third section, titled "End the U.S. War Machine," calls for defunding the Department of War and shutting down overseas U.S. military bases. It also seeks the prosecution of U.S. war criminals through the International Criminal Court, while maintaining support and employment programs for veterans. In a FOX News interview, a representative named Romer confirmed that the proposal "absolutely" calls for defunding the Pentagon. Furthermore, the platform advocates for ending all non-domestic blockades, embargoes, and sanctions, specifically naming those directed at Cuba, Iran, and Venezuela. "People around the world deserve to live their lives without U.S. interference," the platform states.
Inquiries were sent to prominent DSA-aligned politicians—including Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani, Tlaib, Kiros, Avila Chevalier, and Valdez—to clarify if they support the platform's calls to abolish the Senate, replace the president, and defund the military. Valdez's campaign declined to comment on the matter, while the remaining politicians did not respond to the inquiries.
