A Las Vegas jury has concluded a decades-old cold case by finding former gang leader Duane "Keffe D" Davis guilty of murder in the 1996 drive-by killing of legendary hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur. The jury reached their verdict in less than three hours, convicting the 63-year-old on a single count of murder with a deadly weapon.
Prosecutors in Nevada's Clark County successfully argued that Davis orchestrated the shooting in retaliation for a physical altercation involving his nephew at a Las Vegas casino on September 7, 1996. While investigators had long suspected Davis, they lacked the necessary evidence to press charges until he began discussing his involvement in media interviews and a published memoir. These public accounts, combined with recordings of confidential meetings with law enforcement, formed the backbone of the prosecution's case.
The trial, which commenced on August 17, featured recorded conversations detailing how Davis became enraged following the casino dispute involving Shakur and his entourage. That night, Davis and three other men, including his nephew, searched for Shakur and Death Row Records executive Marion "Suge" Knight. Davis admitted to passing a firearm to the back seat of their white Cadillac, from which one of the two passengers opened fire upon pulling alongside the vehicle carrying Knight and the 25-year-old rapper.
Although prosecutors did not identify the specific shooter—noting that the three other occupants of the Cadillac have since died—Davis faced murder charges under Nevada law as a co-conspirator. The defense argued that the statements made by Davis were merely bravado and lacked independent corroboration. Davis was the leader of the Southside Compton Crips, a Los Angeles street gang involved in a long-standing conflict with the Mob Piru gang, which was associated with Shakur and Death Row Records. The death of Shakur remains a defining event in music history, occurring during the peak of the 1990s East Coast–West Coast hip-hop rivalry.
