Anti-government riots in the Albanian capital of Tirana entered their fifth consecutive day on Saturday, as violent clashes erupted once again near the prime minister’s office. The civil unrest has intensified following the involvement of high school and university students, who joined the broader movement calling for the resignation of Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Throughout the city center, protesters engaged in intense confrontations with law enforcement, throwing rocks, flares, fireworks, and petrol bombs. Police responded by deploying water cannons, tear gas, and conducting baton charges. As night descended, the streets of central Tirana became filled with smoke from burning trash bins and tear gas, while protesters set fire to vehicles and repeatedly pressured police cordons, at times forcing officers to retreat.

National Police Chief Skender Hita reported that 167 individuals have been arrested in connection with the ongoing unrest. He further stated that 132 police officers have sustained injuries during the five days of rallies, where he claimed masked individuals have targeted public institutions and both public and private property. In response to allegations that some officers have exceeded their duties, Hita confirmed that seven police officers have been suspended pending internal investigations.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has been in office since 2013 and is currently serving his fourth term, has firmly rejected calls for his resignation. In a video message, he accused his conservative political opponents of inciting the destruction and chaos. Rama stated that he would not permit anyone to jeopardize the country's future for political gain, emphasizing his responsibility to protect citizens, ensure justice, and continue the nation's progress.
