US President Donald Trump is scrapping his final two midterm election rallies, according to an announcement from the Republican National Committee. The decision to cancel the in-person events in Kansas and Iowa comes as the party works to maintain its control of Congress ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Trump has previously urged his party to act as though he is on the ballot to help increase voter turnout.
The Republican National Committee stated that because the party holds a strong position in both Kansas and Iowa, the scheduled in-person rallies in those states will no longer take place. Instead, the President plans to host a large number of virtual telerallies across multiple states. Trump's final in-person election rally is now scheduled to occur in Florida this Friday.
The cancellation announcement followed a tense moment on Thursday when Trump reacted sharply to a reporter who inquired whether he was cancelling the Kansas rally because he was tired of traveling. The 80-year-old President, who has maintained a rigorous schedule of near-daily rallies throughout October, lashed out at the journalist upon returning to Washington from a campaign trip to South Carolina.
"You're sick to ask that question. You are sick," Trump told the reporter before boarding his motorcade to the White House. He further criticized the journalist, stating, "You've been following me for two weeks. I feel perfect. You are disgusting. Put yourself in shape, you look like hell."
