U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated that it is clear Russia interfered with Britain’s 2016 referendum on leaving the European Union. Burnham emphasized the necessity of documenting Moscow's meddling, noting that the information serves as a vital warning for other European nations currently facing similar threats.
In excerpts from the upcoming episode of “The Rest is Politics” podcast, which is set to be released on Monday, the Prime Minister revealed he sought guidance from his advisers shortly after taking office in July. When asked if Russia had indeed interfered in the historic vote, Burnham confirmed, “I’ve had the clear answer that yes, there was.” He further explained that placing these findings on the record is intended to help voters in countries like Germany and France recognize that certain political movements are being instigated by foreign adversaries, specifically Russia.
This marks the first time a British prime minister has officially and publicly acknowledged Russian interference in the Brexit process. The announcement follows persistent warnings from U.K. intelligence agencies regarding the growing risk of Russian efforts to undermine democratic institutions in Britain. Historically, Russia has consistently denied any involvement in the elections or referendums of other countries.
Burnham also highlighted his recent discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a meeting in Berlin last week. The two leaders addressed potential links between Moscow and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. According to Burnham, the Chancellor indicated that the AfD is “clearly linked to Russia, funded I believe,” and noted that significant misinformation and disinformation originating from Russia are currently impacting German politics.
The confirmation arrives years after Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee concluded in a 2020 report that the government had failed to conduct a comprehensive assessment of how Russian state-run media and the use of “troll” accounts might have influenced the outcome of the EU referendum.
