Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan attended the opening session of a two-day G20 foreign ministers' gathering in the Southern United States city of Atlanta. During the event on Friday, the Turkish top diplomat engaged in bilateral discussions with international peers, including Indonesian Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
Talks between Fidan and Motegi focused on strengthening economic ties between Türkiye and Japan while exploring broader avenues of strategic cooperation. According to sources from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Fidan emphasized the importance of increasing mutual investments and fostering joint partnerships between Turkish and Japanese firms operating in third countries. The two foreign ministers also reviewed upcoming high-level official visits between their nations and evaluated recent geopolitical developments in both the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.
Hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the broader G20 diplomatic summit convened top representatives from the world's major economies to address pressing international issues. Discussions centered on energy and food security, global economic hurdles, supply chain resilience, freedom of navigation, and heightened geopolitical friction.
The gathering takes place against the backdrop of the continuing war in Ukraine and growing tensions involving Iran, both of which remain key sources of instability for the global economy and regional peace. The Atlanta session marks the final ministerial meeting held under the current US G20 presidency before global leaders gather for the December 14–15 summit in Miami, Florida.
