Devon and Cornwall Police have initiated a murder investigation following the death of former Member of Parliament Ann Widdecombe. The 78-year-old was discovered dead at her residence in Haytor, located on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, on Thursday.

According to an official police statement, the former lawmaker had “sustained serious injuries” prior to her death. Authorities have announced that they are currently searching for a white male identified as a suspect in the case.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood addressed the incident, stating that the circumstances surrounding the death of the former prisons minister “are extremely distressing.”

Widdecombe, who served as a Conservative lawmaker, gained widespread public recognition following her parliamentary career by appearing as a contestant on the television show Strictly Come Dancing. In her later years, she transitioned into political advocacy, joining the Brexit Party and serving as a spokeswoman for the anti-immigration Reform UK party.
