A devastating wildfire in southern Spain has resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people, with 23 others still reported missing, according to Juanma Moreno, the regional leader of Andalusia. Hundreds of emergency personnel are currently working to contain the blaze, which is believed to have been ignited by a downed power line before spreading rapidly through a wooded area near Los Gallardos in AlmerÃa.
Antonio Sanz, the minister for health and emergencies in Andalusia, described the fire as a complex and fast-moving event. He noted that the victims were discovered in and around the small village of Bédar, located just outside Los Gallardos. Among the deceased, four individuals were found trapped inside a vehicle, which officials noted had the steering wheel on the right side, leading authorities to believe they were of British origin. Eight other victims were discovered in different locations, apparently while attempting to flee the encroaching flames.
Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s health and emergencies minister, said the fire had been complex and rapid and the majority or even all of the victims may have been foreign nationals. A spokesperson for Downing Street confirmed that the UK Foreign Office has been in contact with Spanish authorities regarding the incident. The wildfire is part of a broader trend of extreme weather across Southern Europe this summer, where sustained heatwaves with temperatures reaching approximately 40C (104F) have fueled major blazes in France, Portugal, and Spain, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes.
