Aston Villa have secured the signing of World Cup standout Johan Manzambi from Bundesliga club Freiburg. The move follows a breakout tournament for the forward, who played a pivotal role in helping Switzerland reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1954. During the competition, Manzambi contributed three goals and two assists before Switzerland was eventually eliminated by Argentina in a 3-1 defeat.
Manzambi initially joined the Freiburg youth academy in 2023 and earned a promotion to the senior squad just one year later. During his tenure in Germany, he made 58 appearances across all competitions and netted nine goals. His performance was particularly notable during Freiburg's historic run to the Europa League final, where the team finished as runners-up to Aston Villa.
According to a statement from the club, Manzambi will wear the No.44 shirt at Aston Villa, the same number he donned for Freiburg when he faced the Premier League side during their meeting in Istanbul. The club is now preparing for their upcoming Premier League season opener, which is scheduled to take place at Brighton on August 23.
