Yemen’s Defence Ministry has confirmed that government forces successfully intercepted two explosive-laden drones launched by the Houthi group toward the central city of Marib. According to an unnamed military source cited by the ministry’s September Net website, air defence units engaged the drones as they approached residential neighbourhoods and camps housing displaced people. The source stated that the drones were neutralized without causing any casualties or material damage.
Military officials emphasized that armed forces remain on high alert to detect and respond to such threats, maintaining necessary measures to ensure the protection of civilians and their property. The incident follows a series of warnings from government officials regarding renewed hostilities in the region. Earlier in the day, Deputy Information Minister Mohammed Qizan announced on X that the Houthis had resumed missile and drone attacks on residential areas in Marib. Additionally, the state-run Saba TV, which broadcasts from the city, reported renewed Houthi shelling targeting the densely populated urban center.
The latest drone interception occurred just one day after the Yemeni Health Ministry reported that two civilians were killed and 14 others wounded in previous Houthi missile and drone strikes on the city. On Friday, the Houthi group claimed they had targeted military gatherings and equipment at the Sahn al-Jin military camp in Marib. On the same day, the Yemeni army reported that it had repelled a separate Houthi attack on the city, noting no casualties or material losses among government forces. Clashes between government forces and the Houthis have intensified across multiple front lines since early July, resulting in dozens of casualties on both sides. Yemen has experienced a relative lull in its nearly 12-year conflict since April 2022, following years of Houthi control over the capital, Sanaa, and several other provinces since September 2014.
