A British citizen wanted by United Kingdom police for the killings of his wife and two daughters pleaded guilty on Tuesday to firearms charges in South Africa, where he was arrested in July while fleeing law enforcement.
Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, who is of Zimbabwean heritage, entered the guilty plea in a Johannesburg court. South African authorities have announced that they will initiate extradition proceedings to return him to the U.K. once his local legal case has concluded. Prosecutors in the U.K. intend to charge Tshuma with three counts of murder.
The suspect's wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, and their two daughters, 15-year-old Natalie and 5-year-old Nala, were discovered dead on July 6 at their residence near Bedford, a town located north of London. Investigators confirmed that all three victims had suffered fatal head injuries.
According to British police, Tshuma is believed to have departed the U.K. on July 4. He traveled first to Zimbabwe and subsequently arrived in South Africa before the bodies of his family members were found.
Tshuma was apprehended in Johannesburg on July 10 after Interpol issued a red notice for his arrest. When detained, he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. South African police noted at the time of his arrest that they suspected he intended to use the weapon to end his own life.
