In a series of proclamations issued Tuesday evening, President Donald Trump stated that he found as a fact that Canada is discriminating against the commerce of the United States. He argued that this alleged discrimination places American commerce at a disadvantage when compared to the trade practices of other countries.
The upcoming import prohibitions will specifically cover whey protein concentrates, beers, nonalcoholic beer, and sparkling wines. These actions are being taken in response to Canada's decision to impose tariffs on various American goods, which also went into effect on Sept. 8. The Canadian tariffs target a wide array of U.S. products, including dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics, and electronics.
Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne characterized the new Canadian measures as a "dollar-for-dollar" match for the 50% tariffs previously imposed by President Trump on an estimated 5% worth of Canadian imports. While the U.S. government has reached out to Canadian officials for comment regarding the proclamations, no response was provided in the initial announcement.
