An Economist/YouGov poll released on Sept. 22 shows the president's approval rating dropped by five percentage points in a single week, sliding from 40% to 35%. This sharp decrease effectively erases five consecutive weeks of gains and places his approval just two points above the lowest mark ever recorded in that specific survey.
The current political environment presents mounting challenges for the president. Democrats have established a double-digit lead over Republicans on the generic congressional ballot. Furthermore, the survey indicates that a majority of respondents disapprove of how the president is handling several critical issues, including the military, immigration, foreign policy, and tariffs. Performance on tariffs received the lowest marks, with only 32% of those surveyed approving of his handling of the issue. The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted between Sept. 18 and Sept. 21, surveying 1,402 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
These slipping numbers arrive as Republicans attempt to maintain their majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Analysts suggest the current Democratic strength in various polls could signal a difficult midterm cycle for the GOP. Trump’s week in the polls also included a record low in Reuters/Ipsos tracking released on Monday, Sept. 21, where his approval rating fell to 32%. This figure represents a three-point decline from the previous edition of the poll and establishes a new career low for the president, surpassing his previous floor of 33% reached in December 2017 and again in August of this year. Despite variations between individual polls, major polling averages currently place the president's approval in negative territory.
