Neria Leiter, the son of Israel's ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, sustained serious injuries during a car-ramming attack in the West Bank on Tuesday. The incident occurred at the Maccabim checkpoint, a critical transit point located west of Ramallah, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The military reported that the individual responsible for the attack was neutralized by security forces at the scene. The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the suspect as Mahmoud Suleiman.
Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, who has served as Israel's envoy to the U.S. since January 2025, confirmed the incident on social media. Neria Leiter, who is currently serving as an IDF reservist, is receiving urgent medical care at Shaare Zedek Medical Center. In a public statement, the ambassador expressed his gratitude to the military and the hospital staff, writing, "I am grateful to the IDF, to the medical team at Shaare Zedek who are now fighting to save the life of Neria Dov ben Chana, and for the prayers of the people of Israel." He added, "I believe in the power of prayer, and I believe that when the people of Israel unite, miracles happen. Neria needs a miracle."
The Leiter family has previously endured significant loss; Neria's older brother, Maj. Moshe Yedidya Leiter, was killed in combat in northern Gaza on November 10, 2023. Yechiel Leiter noted that Neria continued his service in the army reserves following his brother's death, completing hundreds of days of duty on various fronts since October 7. Before departing for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the Leiter family at the hospital. The Prime Minister also shared a message of support on social media, stating, "My wife Sarah and I, together with all the people of Israel, are praying for a miracle. Yechiel, my dear, we are all with you."
