U.S. President Donald Trump, alongside leaders from Denmark and Greenland, has signed a new agreement concerning the status of the Arctic island. The accord comes following a period of months marked by threats from the American president to seize the semiautonomous territory, which is part of a NATO ally.
Under the terms of the new agreement, Washington is authorized to modernize and expand its activities at the remote Pituffik Space Base located in the northwest of the island. Furthermore, the U.S. is permitted to establish specific defense areas at Narsarsuaq in the south and Mestersvig in the east, with provisions allowing for the creation of additional defense sites and the strengthening of overall military facilities and operations throughout Greenland.
The agreement facilitates broad U.S. military mobility across the territory, including access to undersea regions. The signatories noted that the security situation in the Arctic is currently shifting, necessitating enhanced efforts to ensure stability in the future. The document reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark while explicitly recognizing the Greenlanders' right to self-determination.
All three parties have expressed support for a stronger NATO engagement within the Arctic, specifically regarding joint intelligence gathering, exercises, planning, and presence. The U.S. military is granted access to defend the NATO area, Greenland itself, and the American continent, a provision that includes the implementation of a "Golden Dome defense system."
The preamble of the accord also emphasizes the importance of protecting Greenland's pristine environment. It further underscores the economic, social, and cultural rights of the local population, specifically protecting their traditional way of life, including hunting and fishing, as well as their historical and future activities.
