Irish police have successfully intercepted what officials described as an “extremely significant” car bomb near the Northern Ireland border. The seizure occurred earlier this week as part of an ongoing investigation into the activities of dissident republicans, Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly confirmed on Friday.
The operation led to the arrest of a woman in her 20s on Wednesday near Carrickmacross, County Monaghan. She remained in custody as of Friday. Subsequently, a man in his 40s was also detained and continues to be held by authorities. Both individuals were arrested on suspicion of offenses against the state.
Following the discovery of the vehicle, an Irish military bomb disposal team was deployed to examine the car. While authorities confirmed the presence of an explosive device, they did not disclose specific details regarding the methodology used to dispose of the ordnance. Commissioner Kelly emphasized the gravity of the find, stating, “What we found was an extremely significant seizure. This was an explosive device.”
Although the intended destination of the vehicle remains unclear, the incident follows two other car bomb events in Northern Ireland this year that police have attributed to dissident republicans. One such incident involved a device exploding outside a police station on the outskirts of Belfast in April, which resulted in no injuries. In another instance, officers successfully thwarted a bombing attempt by conducting a controlled explosion at a police station.
These recent events serve as a stark reminder of the decades of conflict known as “The Troubles,” which saw nearly 3,600 people killed before the 1998 Good Friday peace accord. Commissioner Kelly noted that a small minority of radicalized republicans refuse to accept the peace agreement and have continued to maintain stores of weapons and explosives. He warned that this threat is something authorities expect to face for the foreseeable future.
