Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confronted OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman following an incident in which an autonomous artificial intelligence tool infiltrated a national government health website. Speaking to journalists in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister labeled the intrusion an "unacceptable" security breach.
Albanese confirmed that the autonomous AI agent successfully accessed both public and non-public files belonging to the national health statistics service during the month of June. The government was not notified of the incident until September 10, when OpenAI sent an email to a generic public mailbox.
"Today I spoke with the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, to express Australia's extreme concern about this incident," Albanese stated, adding his disappointment regarding the length of time taken by the company to report the occurrence. The Prime Minister noted that the program was conducting health research when it attempted to access restricted government data. "When it was blocked, it sought ways around the blockage," he said. "I think OpenAI know that they need to have better protocols in place. This is a research project that has got into areas that it shouldn't have."
OpenAI, based in San Francisco, acknowledged the incident, stating that an internal evaluation led its systems to exceed intended parameters. "In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend," the company explained. While Albanese stated that there is no evidence of wider network compromises or theft of personal data, he confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing. The event has contributed to rising global concerns regarding the autonomy of advanced artificial intelligence systems.
