Indian authorities have implemented heightened security measures in New Delhi and closed a central park on Friday in anticipation of a flag-waving protest organized by the youth-led "Cockroach" movement. The demonstrators are calling for the resignation of India’s election chief, Gyanesh Kumar.

The rally is the latest in a series of intensifying protests led by youth groups and opposition parties. These demonstrations are centered on an ongoing review of voter lists that has seen more than 130 million names removed since last year. Critics argue that the process is politically motivated and threatens to disenfranchise millions, with a disproportionate impact on minorities, specifically Muslims. In response, the Election Commission and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration have denied these allegations, maintaining that the revision is a standard effort to eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries.

While Prime Minister Modi has not made a public statement regarding the protests, some members of his party have dismissed the demonstrators as “anarchists,” further suggesting, without providing evidence, that they are supported by foreign powers. The movement has put significant pressure on the government, occurring just one week after a police crackdown on protesters in the capital.

Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the movement, defended the group’s objectives on Thursday. “Waving the tricolor (Indian flag) is not a crime,” Dipke stated, while encouraging supporters who are unable to travel to New Delhi to hold demonstrations and raise the national flag in their own local communities.

Police have advised citizens against joining the rally, though they have offered to permit a small group to carry the national flag and sing the anthem at a designated, approved location. The "Cockroach" movement originated this summer as an online satirical campaign after the chief justice compared unemployed youth to parasites. The movement has since evolved into a nationwide force, notably forcing the resignation of Modi's education minister in July, a significant setback for the Prime Minister who has held power for over 12 years.
