Aiden Markram has addressed ongoing speculation regarding the vacant captaincy at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the upcoming IPL season. While many view the South African T20 captain as a natural successor following his work with other RPSG Group franchises in the SA20 and The Hundred, Markram stated on Sunday that he has not yet focused on the prospect.
The captaincy position at LSG became available after Rishabh Pant stepped down in May following the team's last-place finish in the points table. Pant has since been traded to the Delhi Capitals for Kuldeep Yadav. Markram emphasized that the decision rests with the team management, noting, "There's some quality leaders in that group that we have there, so I'm not too fussed about it. Whoever gets it I'm sure will take it on and do a good job."
Beyond Markram, other potential candidates within the 2026 squad include Australian T20 skipper Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran, who has previous experience leading the West Indies. The franchise also retains the option of recruiting a new leader during the upcoming IPL mini-auction, though available high-level options may be limited.
Markram spoke on the subject while competing in The Hundred at The Oval. Reflecting on his current form, he noted that he has enjoyed the challenges of the 100-ball format, particularly with the guidance of teammates like Jos Buttler. Despite a difficult start to the season where he scored 67 runs across four innings, Markram found a better rhythm with a quick 50 on Sunday, though it came during a heavy defeat for Manchester Super Giants. The team has now lost three consecutive matches after winning their first two, leaving them in need of victories in their final three games to qualify for the knockout stages. "It was a pity to get out in the moment that I did," Markram said of his latest performance. "I've struggled, but tonight was a bit better. The wicket was obviously good, and when you come across a good wicket and you're maybe struggling for runs, you get a bit excited, so I was quite keen for tonight. It felt like an evening where you could get a really big one for the side and I was quite disappointed to get out when I did, but nice to find a little bit of rhythm and flow and hopefully I can run with that now."
