Actor Billy Gardell believes that undergoing bariatric surgery was a life-saving decision following his diagnosis with Type 2 diabetes. Reflecting on his health journey in a recent conversation with podcast cohost Tom Papa, Gardell explained that his ability to maintain his health for years was likely due to his youth in sports and decent genetics. However, he noted that eventually, he could not simply outrun the physical toll of his weight. Gardell described a pattern of fluctuating weight, noting that he would frequently lose and gain 30 pounds over the course of several years.
During his time on the sitcom "Mike & Molly," which ran from 2010 to 2016, his weight climbed to 375 pounds. By the time he worked on "Bob Hearts Abishola" between 2021 and 2024, he had managed to drop to 275 pounds. He humorously recalled his doctor’s warning that after turning 50, "the warranties start running out." Gardell emphasized that his children served as his primary motivation for seeking medical intervention. He expressed a desire to avoid a future where he would be unable to perform simple tasks like getting out of a chair after all the success he has achieved in his career.
Addressing his use of medication, Gardell noted he was on Ozempic for a year to manage his Type 2 diabetes before the drug was widely recognized for weight loss. While he acknowledged receiving a nice paycheck for his role as a spokesperson, he ultimately decided to pursue surgery because he wanted a permanent change. He admitted that had he been aware of the drug's weight-loss capabilities at the time, he might have continued with that treatment instead. While he acknowledged that the bariatric procedure came with certain downsides, he remains satisfied with his choice. He highlighted the personal rewards of his transformation, specifically the ability to enjoy family vacations, such as snorkeling with his children, a freedom he previously lacked due to his physical condition.
His children were a major motivator for him to lose weight and undergo the bariatric surgery procedure, saying, "I don't want to survive what I've survived, succeed what I've succeeded and then not be able to get out of a chair."
"Overall, the gift of being able to go on vacation with the family, you know, and if we're on a boat and they're going to go snorkeling … I used to have to say, 'Well, tell me how it is,' if I went in the ocean the fish would swim the other way," he said.
