Hundreds of fans lined the streets of a seaside Welsh village on Saturday to bid farewell to late singer Bonnie Tyler as her coffin was brought home. The Grammy-nominated Welsh pop star, who gained worldwide fame for her 1983 chart-topping power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” died last month at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal. She had been hospitalized in Faro, where she maintained a residence, following emergency intestinal surgery in May.
Locals and admirers from across the United Kingdom and beyond gathered in Mumbles, located near the city of Swansea, to witness the hearse carrying her coffin, which was draped in a Welsh flag. Many mourners waited outside the singer’s former home to pay their respects or leave floral tributes. Among those present, 18-year-old Carys Edwards noted that the singer frequently returned home to connect with her Welsh fans, adding that her music deeply touched many people in the region.
Born Gaynor Hopkins, the singer was the daughter of a coal miner and grew up in public housing in Skewen, Wales, roughly 7 miles or 11 kilometers from Swansea. She was raised alongside three sisters and two brothers. Throughout her career, Tyler received three Grammy nominations and represented Britain at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, where she placed 19th. In 2022, she was honored by Queen Elizabeth II as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to music.
Her signature ballad, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” reached the top of the charts in both Britain and the United States and has accumulated more than 1 billion streams, a figure bolstered by real-world solar eclipses in 2017, 2024, and most recently this week. She was also celebrated for hits such as “It's a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero,” the latter of which appeared on the “Footloose” film soundtrack. A celebration of Tyler’s life for friends and family is scheduled at a Swansea church on Monday, followed by a final procession through her hometown of Skewen.
