A 36-year-old British mother has died after rescuing her two sons who were swept away by a powerful ocean current while snorkelling in the Bahamas, prompting her husband to pay a heartfelt tribute to his "hero" wife.
Leanne Gregory, from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was on a family snorkelling trip off the coast of Bimini when her children were caught in the strong water current, according to police. Her husband, Nathan Gregory, who had been with her for 22 years, described the loss of his "childhood sweetheart" as "unimaginable for our family."
Writing in an emotional Facebook post, Nathan Gregory honored his wife: "She was the purest, most amazing wife, mother and friend to have ever walked this Earth. I will never get over this, she was my soulmate, my childhood sweetheart, my one and only. The foundation of my entire family and the strength that held us all together." He added, "My boys had to witness something nobody should ever have to see of any age, but they know Mum died an absolute hero."
In addition to his post, Nathan Gregory established a fundraising page "for my sons and security after the tragic loss." Detailing the tragic sequence of events on the page, he explained that his wife clung to their son until help arrived "but didn't have the energy to save herself." Reflecting on her sacrifice, he wrote, "I just have to be thankful for the hero she was in life and in death, and totally grateful for the fact my boys got out safely." Both children were brought to safety off Bimini's shore.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that officers on the island launched an investigation following reports received shortly after 10:00 local time on Tuesday. Authorities stated that the woman was located unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock after being swept away. Rescuers administered CPR at the dock before transporting Mrs. Gregory to a local medical clinic, where she was officially confirmed dead.
Bahamian police indicated that an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, noting that "foul play is not suspected." Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Foreign Office extended condolences and confirmed official assistance: "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas. We are in contact with the local authorities and providing support to her family."
