A vehicle struck a crowd of rugby league supporters gathered on a road north of Sydney on Saturday morning, leaving 10 people injured, including multiple young children, Australian officials reported.
The incident occurred in Newcastle as fans assembled to cheer on the Newcastle Knights. A large crowd had gathered on the street to see the team's bus off ahead of their rugby league finals match scheduled for Sunday. Supporters had been out in large numbers throughout the week, with thousands turning up to watch the team train.
According to New South Wales police, two of the injured are in critical condition: a 5-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man. The other eight victims are hospitalized in stable condition. Those in stable condition include two more young children, a 5-year-old girl and a 2-year-old girl.
