Tech executive Shivon Zilis has announced her separation from billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. Zilis, 40, confirmed the split in a post on the social media platform X, shortly after an account focusing on big tech pointed out that the SpaceX and Tesla CEO was no longer following her on the platform.
Sharing her feelings about the abrupt end of their relationship, Zilis wrote that it is hard to go from being in love to being let go in a week without any warning, adding that "that’s just how it is sometimes." Despite the sudden breakup, she expressed gratitude for their time together, stating she felt happy she was able to show Musk "how it feels to be deeply understood, nurtured, and peacefully loved with stability and gentleness." Along with her statement, Zilis attached a screenshot depicting what appeared to be some of the final text messages exchanged between her and Musk before they went their separate ways.
Zilis, a Yale-educated tech executive, first crossed paths with the South African-born businessman in 2016 when she joined OpenAI. According to reports, their romantic relationship began after Musk served as her sperm donor. Over the course of their relationship, the couple had four children together. In her post, Zilis described their family environment as a "safe space" for Musk, shielding him from his chaotic and highly publicized life. She added that her heart was full knowing she had provided that comfort, writing that she hoped "it leaves a lasting good effect."
Describing their home life, Zilis noted it was "a place where all of us were overjoyed to see him and one that was always full of happiness and love, not war, in contrast to his otherwise militant existence." She explained that she loved being a "counterbalancing place of safety, sense of calm, and love," and took delight in bringing a smile back to his face when he was down. Zilis admitted she would miss Musk "dearly," stating she loved him "more than life itself" and that he had taught her "100 lifetimes of knowledge" and made her cup "overflow with life meaning."
Addressing the pain of the separation, Zilis acknowledged there is "a lot of loss" but emphasized her focus on their four children, whom she called the "beautiful little loves of my life." Looking toward the future, she expressed hope that she and Musk can remain close. She wrote that she hopes and prays they can be "great friends and coparents," adding that while she is hurting, she cares deeply about him and will always cheer for his happiness.
Representatives for Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter. Beyond the four children he shares with Zilis, Musk has fathered 10 other children with three different women over the last two decades. He shares children with Canadian author Justine Wilson, musician Grimes, and conservative commentator Ashley St. Clair. His eldest son with Wilson, Nevada Alexander, was born in 2002 but tragically passed away from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at just 10 weeks old.
