Chelsea have officially bolstered their midfield with the signing of 36-year-old England international Jordan Henderson. The veteran midfielder, who previously won both the Premier League and the Champions League during his time at Liverpool, joins the club following the termination of his contract at west London rivals Brentford last week.
Reflecting on the move, Henderson expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge. He stated that the size of the club, his admiration for the manager, and the quality of the current squad made this an opportunity he could not decline. He added that he was particularly impressed by the ownership's ambition to drive Chelsea toward success. Regarding his personal commitment, Henderson noted that he intends to give everything on and off the pitch to support his teammates, stating he is eager to get started.
Henderson’s career path has been varied in recent years; after leaving Anfield in 2023, he had a stint with Saudi club Al-Ettifaq before moving to Ajax. He subsequently returned to the Premier League last year on a two-year contract with Brentford. Internationally, the 91-cap midfielder was part of England's 2026 World Cup squad, where he made limited appearances before suffering a broken arm later in the tournament.
The arrival of Henderson comes just two days after Chelsea signed veteran Danny Welbeck from Brighton. The club has been active in the transfer market, having recently set a British-record fee of £117 million ($157 million) to acquire Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Additionally, Chelsea have secured French defender Maxence Lacroix and Atalanta defender Marco Palestra. The Blues, who finished 10th last season and missed out on European qualification, are preparing for their Premier League opener against Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24 under the guidance of manager Xabi Alonso.
"For me, it's about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I'm very excited to get going."
