Colombia has officially cleared the way for coal exports to Israel to resume, overturning a ban implemented under the country's former president, Gustavo Petro, during the conflict in Gaza.
The decision was formalized through a newly signed government decree. Colombia's current president, Abelardo de la Espriella, stated that he authorized the resumption of these exports to end "ideological bans and restrictions of the past." According to De la Espriella, the previous restrictions had harmed the domestic economy, compromised legal certainty, and damaged international confidence in the country.
Commerce, Industry, and Tourism Minister Mauricio Gomez Amin confirmed that the government had finalized the decree, echoing the president's sentiment by labeling the prior suspension as an "ideological" measure. This policy shift was also praised by the Association of Professionals of the Colombian Mining Sector, which emphasized that the reversal was rooted in technical, rather than political, considerations and would deliver economic advantages to the nation.
The original embargo, enacted in August 2025, halted shipments due to Israel's military actions in Palestine and their consequences for civilians. At the time, the Petro administration argued the ban was necessary to prevent Colombian resources from fueling the conflict. The suspension cut shipments to Israel by roughly 3.5 million tonnes per year, representing an estimated loss of $200 million in annual export revenue, according to the National Federation of Coal Producers (Fenalcarbon).
In response to the initial ban, Israel shifted its energy supply. Carlos Cante, the president of Fenalcarbon, noted that Israel increased its coal imports from South Africa and boosted the use of natural gas in its thermal power stations. Looking forward, the current Colombian administration intends to further bolster commercial relations with Israel and seek out new markets for domestic goods as part of its broader strategy to dismantle the economic policies of the Petro era.
