A parasitic infection known for causing severe gastrointestinal distress has spread to 47 states, reaching unprecedented levels across the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) weekly update on August 4, there have been 10,468 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis reported since May 1. This figure marks a significant increase of more than 3,700 cases since the agency's previous report on July 28.
The geographic reach of the infection has expanded to 47 states, up from 45 the prior week. Federal data indicates that at least 12,255 additional cases remain unconfirmed by laboratories. To date, the outbreak has resulted in 517 hospitalizations and two deaths. Only Delaware, Hawaii, and Montana have avoided reported cases, while Washington, D.C., has reported a small number of infections. Michigan and Ohio currently remain the most heavily impacted regions.
Federal health authorities continue to investigate what they believe are several separate outbreaks. The largest of these is centered in Michigan, where state officials have reported 11,508 cases and two deaths as of August 4. These state-level figures differ from the CDC's count because they have not yet been fully verified and reported to federal officials. The Food and Drug Administration has linked the Michigan-centered outbreak to recalled iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms. This specific outbreak has seen cases confirmed in nine states: Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
The CDC exclusively reports lab-confirmed cases occurring on or after May 1 in individuals who have not engaged in international travel within 14 days of the onset of symptoms. Due to verification, tracking, and reporting delays, federal data often lags behind state-level counts by approximately six weeks. Cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis and is typically contracted through the consumption of contaminated food or water. Symptoms often mirror food poisoning, including watery, frequent, and sometimes "explosive" diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
While many individuals recover at home without medical intervention, the infection can cause serious complications for those with compromised immune systems or underlying health conditions. Tracking the source of these outbreaks remains challenging due to long incubation periods, difficulties in obtaining samples, and the lack of genetic tracking tools comparable to those used for pathogens like E. coli or listeria. Beyond the lettuce-linked cluster, the CDC and FDA are investigating several other separate case clusters with no identified common source.
