Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot has firmly ruled out entering a governing coalition led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasizing that even personal intervention from US President Donald Trump would not shift his position. Speaking at a closed-door gathering, Eisenkot rejected any involvement in a Netanyahu administration and stressed that the country's political future must be determined internally.
"I will not sit in a government led by Netanyahu," Eisenkot was quoted as saying during the meeting. Addressing potential foreign involvement, he added, "If Trump invites me, I will respect the president and attend, but I will stress that this concerns internal Israeli affairs, and I will prevent any interference." The firm stance comes as Netanyahu insists on leading any broad government while explicitly rejecting any coalition supported by the two main Arab factions, Ra’am and the Joint List.
Eisenkot's statements arrive amid a political deadlock as opposition factions gather behind a proposal for President Isaac Herzog to task the Yashar leader with assembling the next administration. Official presidential consultations are scheduled to begin on Wednesday and Thursday. Support for Eisenkot grew on Monday when Yair Golan's Democrats party announced its endorsement, aligning with earlier commitments made by Naftali Bennett’s Together party and Avigdor Lieberman's Yisrael Beytenu.
With expected backing from both Ra'am and the Joint List, Eisenkot could collect recommendations from 67 lawmakers in the 120-member Knesset. By comparison, Netanyahu's bloc holds 53 recommendations following last Tuesday's elections, which resulted in a fractured parliament. Netanyahu's 53-seat alliance consists of 27 seats for Likud, seven each for United Torah Judaism and Otzma Yehudit, and six seats each for Shas and Religious Zionism.
