Authorities in France and Spain are engaged in an intense battle against fast-moving wildfires that have forced the evacuation of more than 300,000 people across the two nations. The situation remains critical as persistent, difficult weather conditions continue to fuel the blazes.
In southwestern France, the Gironde region near Bordeaux has seen a significant intensification of fires. Officials have expanded evacuation orders to include more than 200,000 people in total, though roughly 3,000 of the initial 197,000 evacuees were permitted to return home. Strong local winds have severely hampered containment efforts. The human toll in France includes the deaths of two firefighters near Bordeaux earlier this week. Across the country, approximately 98,000 hectares have been scorched, with over 32,000 hectares destroyed in the southwest alone, where at least 100 buildings have been lost.
To bolster the response, the French government has deployed 1,500 soldiers, 1,700 security personnel, and additional aircraft, while approximately 1,400 firefighters work on the front lines.
Spain is facing similar devastation, particularly in areas near Toledo and west of Madrid. Authorities have ordered evacuations for at least eight municipalities near Toledo, following an earlier evacuation of 60,000 people from villages west of Madrid on Saturday. The Spanish Interior Ministry reported that two major wildfires have merged into one, threatening regions near the capital and burning up to 25,000 hectares. A separate wildfire near Valencia resulted in one death on Saturday.
European Union member states have provided firefighting aircraft to support the containment operations in both countries as crews continue to fight the fires that have persisted for several days.
