Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov used his address at the United Nations General Assembly to launch a formal accusation against European nations, claiming they are actively working to block efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Lavrov alleged that Europe is doing everything within its power to thwart peace talks that the Trump administration has expressed interest in pursuing.
"The aims of the special military operation will be achieved, the threat to Russian security will be eliminated and peaceful life will come back. This will happen no matter the circumstances," Lavrov declared in his speech, employing the terminology favored by Moscow to describe the war. His remarks come during a period of heightened intensity, as both Russia and Ukraine have escalated military operations following what was described as the deadliest summer since the initial 2022 invasion.
On Saturday, officials reported that Russian attacks resulted in the deaths of four people across Ukraine. Simultaneously, Kyiv has persisted in its strategy of utilizing long-range drones to strike Russian industrial sites and oil refineries. Amid these developments, former U.S. President Donald Trump commented on his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stating his hope that the Ukrainian leader would "settle" with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelenskyy, who had previously noted his trust in the White House's potential to help conclude the invasion, responded to the ongoing violence on Saturday. "If the Russians have chosen to make their strikes even more brutal, the world must choose stronger responses to keep the war from spreading further," Zelenskyy stated via social media, emphasizing that Russia is escalating the situation daily.
Prior to his address, Lavrov held a meeting with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, marking the first such encounter between the top diplomats of Moscow and Berlin since the conflict began. The meeting occurred against a backdrop of deteriorating relations, characterized by Germany's accusation that Russia orchestrated a drone attack on Leipzig airport and the subsequent mutual closure of consulates. During his own address to the assembly, Wadephul condemned the war, stating it targets the lives of millions, the existence of the Ukrainian state, and the European peace order, while urging Russia to negotiate an end to the hostilities.
