Oslo Mayor Anne Lindboe has postponed her wedding following the death of King Harald V of Norway. The ceremony, where she was set to marry her fiancé Pål Sandvid on Friday, was called off after the 89-year-old monarch passed away earlier that same day, her political adviser confirmed.
Lindboe, who has been with Sandvid for five years and announced their engagement in June, shared a heartfelt tribute to the late king on Instagram. "It's hard to imagine an Oslo and a Norway without you. You didn't need a crown to be king," she wrote, adding that even the majority of Norwegians who never met him in person still felt like they knew him. Her political adviser stated that no new date has been set for the wedding yet.
King Harald V passed away at the national hospital in Norway's capital, where he was undergoing treatment for a rare blood condition. He had reigned for 35 years. Following his death, his son ascended the throne on Friday as King Haakon VIII. The late monarch, known for breaking royal tradition by marrying a commoner, Queen Sonja, passed away just one day before what would have been their 58th wedding anniversary.
In the wake of his passing, members of the public gathered to lay flowers outside the Royal Palace in Oslo. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre delivered a televised memorial address, stating that the nation is "united in grief and gratitude" for Harald's service and that his "legacy lives on."
Internationally, the UK's King Charles III expressed grief over the loss of his "dear cousin." King Harald V was a second cousin of King Charles's mother, Queen Elizabeth II, while the new King Haakon VIII is a great-great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria.
