Nigerian troops have successfully rescued 33 individuals who were kidnapped while traveling through the Tsafe area of Zamfara state, according to an official army statement released on Sunday. The military operation was initiated following the abduction of the group on Saturday by unidentified gunmen.
Army spokesman Aliyu Danja confirmed the rescue in a statement, noting that the military engaged the attackers with effective fire. This tactical response forced the gunmen to abandon their captives and flee into the surrounding bushes. While the military has not identified the specific group responsible for the kidnapping, Danja stated that troops are currently working to track the fleeing suspects.
The region has experienced a significant escalation in violence, with Zamfara state reporting a surge in both abductions and killings in recent months. Security data indicates that at least 32 people were killed in separate attacks throughout the state in June alone. These security challenges persist despite repeated commitments from President Bola Tinubu to address the ongoing crisis in Africa’s most populous nation.
Beyond the instability in the northwest and north-central regions, the United Nations reports that a long-standing insurgency in the northeast has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of people.
