Southern Brave Women opened their Hundred campaign with a hard-fought eight-run victory over Welsh Fire Women, successfully defending a total of 126. The Brave bowlers maintained their composure under pressure to restrict the hosts to 118 for 8 from their 100 balls.
Asked to bat first, Southern Brave navigated an early wobble to reach a competitive score. Lizelle Lee provided the initial momentum with 31 from 26 balls, but Heather Graham dented the innings by removing both Lee and Maia Bouchier, finishing with figures of 4 for 19. Sophia Smale also contributed by dismissing Jemimah Rodrigues near the halfway mark. Laura Wolvaardt anchored the Brave innings with a composed 45 not out, supported by a brisk 22 off 16 from Sophie Molineux, who struck four boundaries. Despite Graham returning to remove Molineux and Sarah Glenn in the closing stages, Wolvaardt batted through the innings to ensure the team reached 126 for 7.
Welsh Fire’s chase faced an early setback when Sophie Molineux bowled Ella McCaughan within the first 10 balls. However, Georgia Voll and Freya Kemp rebuilt the innings with a 75-run partnership that shifted the momentum. Voll displayed excellent timing and placement to reach a 39-ball fifty, while Kemp contributed 39 off 29 balls, leaving the Fire well-positioned at 80 for 1 after 58 balls.
The match turned decisively when Jemimah Rodrigues executed a direct hit to run out Kemp, triggering a dramatic collapse. Eight balls later, Molineux dismissed Sophie Devine. With the Fire needing 23 runs from the final 20 balls, the chase unraveled. Tilly Corteen-Coleman dismissed the well-set Voll for 52, and Lauren Bell removed Georgia Wareham and Em Arlott in the space of three balls. Molineux then claimed the wicket of Niamh Holland, resulting in the Fire losing five wickets for six runs in just 13 balls. Left needing 13 off the final five deliveries, the hosts fell short as Corteen-Coleman bowled Heather Graham in the final set. Sophie Molineux finished with 3 for 14, Lauren Bell took 3 for 16, and Tilly Corteen-Coleman returned 2 for 22.
